Joel Reading was lonely.
Nineteen years old, estranged from his family and seemingly unable to ever get a second date, he’s surrounded himself with the things he loved most: old books and old music.
When one date got out of hand before it even began, Joel found himself displaced from a flooded apartment and on the doorstep of a handsome and older stranger, more than willing to take Joel in for the night.
Gabriel Hunter had waited years for the right man.
When a distressed Joel showed up at his door needing a place to stay, it was more perfect than Gabriel could ever have hoped for. He quickly found himself falling for the complex and beautiful boy he welcomed into his house and started to believe in a future with the young man he adoringly called Little Red.
Unfortunately, Gabriel was a man of many secrets, and they threatened to unravel the delicate relationship he was building with Joel.
Would Joel be able to see beyond Gabriel’s deliberate omissions and give their love a chance, or would Gabriel’s kind of love prove to be more than Joel could handle?
Kate Hawthorne delivers an unexpected adventure packed with surprises. There was perhaps a slow arc to reader engagement and this book might not be for everyone but for those who love a little non-incestual taboo in their romance, in their gay romance, with a sprinkle of spice and psychological thriller this was a smorgasbord of sensual flavor! I doubt if any reader could say that they had the secrets figured out and could see ahead when reading this story. I could not.
The two main characters have an age gap, certainly, an experience gap and Gabriel has a bit of kink in his repertoire. Young Joel’s goal in life is to be important to someone; important enough to be remembered and perhaps for his life milestones to be recorded in a bible. We meet him immediately in this story and come to understand this man and his nature. Gabriel is much more mysterious. We meet Gabriel before Joel does and we really don’t understand how they connect; how their lives intersect. Gabriel has had a life mission as well but it is a little more difficult to understand and accept, if the reader can accept this behavior, this passion, at all. His psyche is unusual and his self-concept based primarily on the opinions and words of adults of influence early in his life.
I mentioned a smorgasbord and truly this story is sweet and spicy, dark and delicious. One of my favorite parts was a point where Joel comes to realize that the passion is “far too much” but undoubtedly, “he deserves it”.
I absolutely recommend this story for the discerning reader and am anxious to read the next story from the imagination of Ms. Hawthorne. 4.5 stars “beyond reason or sanity“!
